function Insulating
An insulating garment is designed to retain body heat. The garment can be lined with natural or synthetic padding or knitted with a three-dimensional structure that traps and keeps heated air, or it can be made with a warming wool or fleece.
Body heat is generated when fat, carbohydrates and protein are converted to energy. The body regulates its temperature and stays around 37°C even when the ambient temperature changes. When the body is cooled down, the act of shivering can increase heat production by four to five times; the body also decreases the blood flow to the hands and feet to prioritise circulation to the vital organs. Overheating is regulated through perspiration – the cooling effect is the result of sweat evaporating from the skin.
The four basic principles for staying warm (‘COLD’) will maximise the insulating effect of a garment: Keep the clothing Clean, avoid Overheating the body, wear the clothes in Layers, and keep them Dry.
