JR–WORK–SHOP

The joy of problem-solving

ARTIST This winter, we are invited to discover the playful world of Sofia Ekvall and Mats Johansson, the creative minds behind Stockholm-based design studio and toy brand JR-Work-Shop, whose geometric illustrations are featured in the latest ARKET Artist Edition.

A graphic designer and illustrator, Sofia Ekvall and Mats Johansson founded JR-Work-Shop to celebrate creativity and highlight the value of traditional crafting techniques, childlike imagination, and ingenious problem-solving.

JR–Work–Shop is also a physical space in Stockholm, Sweden, where the duo invite children and adults to use their own hands to experience the joy of a new idea. The geometric and lively motifs created for ARKET Artist Edition reflect their heartfelt mission and offer an inspiring look into their imaginative world.

‘JR–Work–Shop is a platform we created to work in several disciplines: branding, design, graphic design, and illustration. We also design and create toys and four years ago we did our first workshop to explore craftsmanship with others, and to invite families to create something together.’

'The key for a creative brain is to be open-minded'

‘As a family with children, we also wish to invite kids into to this process of exploration. It’s something relevant these days, as it provides quality time outside the screen. We want kids to have the chance to use real materials, real tools, because they don't get to do that so often. When they get this opportunity, and produce something they are proud of, they grow as people.’

‘The workshops are an opportunity to explore craftsmanship first-hand, passing on the appreciation for objects. Hosting these workshops for families also provides an opportunity for parents and children to do something together, side by side. Quality time for the family is not something to take for granted.’

The grid is an essential element of our visual identity. It represents the notion of the archive and is used to organise and display information ranging from the names of plants to fabric weights and different types of materials used in our collections. These nine squares symbolise the separate parts that together form our world, and they are also the areas where we strive to make a difference.
