FIVE MINUTES FOR YOURSELF

with Ritchie Foster

Balance Ritchie Foster describes himself as a father, and a talker who loves a good conversation. He is also curious, adventurous, and conscious about our accountability towards the environment. Inspired by his harmonious approach to well-being, we asked him about our collective responsibility to be and do better.

‘All you need is five minutes of activity: five minutes standing outside and taking deep breaths of fresh air. If you don’t feel any better, that’s OK. You need to accept the good with the bad and let yourself experience the feeling of being low. But then you can try again in a couple of hours. And if you do feel better, run with it because that feeling will only grow.’

‘I have always felt a respect for our planet and the environment. Having a child has definitely enhanced the need to ensure that there is a healthy planet for them in the future. We are only visitors and, whilst we are here, we should seek to live in harmony with nature and all of the world’s other inhabitants. It is our duty to ensure that generations after us get to live a better life – not a worse one.’

‘It’s important to make sure there is some uninterrupted time in your day to just be, even if it’s only five minutes. Some time to truly switch off, sit down in silence, have a bath or listen to music, etc. And also some outdoor time with nature – going for a walk in the park can completely change your mindset. I like to go out for ten minutes late at night when the busy streets of London are empty and tranquil.’

The grid is an essential element of our visual identity. It represents the notion of the archive and is used to organise and display information ranging from the names of plants to fabric weights and different types of materials used in our collections. These nine squares symbolise the separate parts that together form our world, and they are also the areas where we strive to make a difference.
