KNOWLEDGE

POPLIN

Knowledge Poplin is the popular term for plain-weave cotton shirting. The fabrics are woven with single yarns in both warp and weft, resulting in a smooth and silky texture.

In everyday speech, poplin refers to a wide group of plain-weave cotton shirting, made by interlacing single yarns of the same weight, such as 50s or 60s. Depending on the fineness of the yarn, poplins can range from very fine and crisp to coarser and heavier qualities. Modern poplin fabrics have a smooth and silky surface and typically also get a special finish to enhance the sheen or to achieve a specific tactile effect. Traditional poplin (from the French word ‘popeline’), however, was a ribbed and rigid fabric woven from silk and worsted wool, used for clerical clothing in the papal city of Avignon in southern France.
