History Ski parka

The distinguishing details of ARKET’s backpack-strap jacket have been sourced from a vintage rubberised-nylon wet-weather parka, originally made as an oversized final layer for skiing. The ski jacket is a highly functional garment and was designed to offer protection against moisture and cold.

The origins of the style date back to the 19th century when skiing evolved from practical activity to sophisticated sport. The popularisation of the sport propelled the progress of clothing specifically developed for mountain conditions. As layering was essential to regulate body temperature, ski jackets were often thin but impervious shells that provided a barrier against wind and snow. Commonly oversized, they could be be worn over heavier, insulating clothing.

Along with the technological advances of the textile industry, and influenced by utilitarian clothing, the ski jacket became a highly functional garment by the 1960s. Some of the innovations incorporated into the style included rubberised waterproof fabrics, a peaked hood, zip fastenings (which were more effective in sealing jackets and pockets than buttons), as well as adjustable tabs at sleeves and hem. Built with shoulder straps on the inside, the jacket could be easily taken off and worn on the back in milder weather.
