The origins of the style date back to the 19th century when skiing evolved from practical activity to sophisticated sport. The popularisation of the sport propelled the progress of clothing specifically developed for mountain conditions. As layering was essential to regulate body temperature, ski jackets were often thin but impervious shells that provided a barrier against wind and snow.
