How to care for jersey garments

Jersey is a knitted fabric commonly used to make T-shirts, loungewear, and more. Properly caring for your jersey garments will help maintain their softness and stretch.

Washing jersey garments

  • Read care labels and follow the washing and drying instructions.

  • Only wash jersey garments when truly needed – avoid washing after every use unless necessary. The garments you wear closest to your body on a daily basis naturally require regular washing.

  • Spot treating and steaming are excellent alternatives to a full wash.

  • Between washes, allow them to air out for a refreshed feel or apply garment refresher spray.

  • Wash jersey garments with similar colours to prevent colour bleeding.

  • Turn the garments inside out before washing to prevent pilling and reduce friction on the outer surface of the garment.

  • Opt for the lowest temperature and shortest cycle to prevent shrinkage and reduce stress on the fabric.

  • Use a mild detergent free from harsh chemicals and bleach.

  • Do not overload the washing machine, as this can cause excessive friction and wear on the garments.

  • Consider skipping the fabric softener, as it can leave residues that build up over time, affecting the fabric’s breathability. If a softer feel is desired, use a small amount of white vinegar in the rinse cycle instead.

Drying jersey garments

  • Air dry your jersey garments to help maintain their shape. Be aware that hanging garments can stretch the fabric.

  • When air drying, keep the garments out of direct sunlight to prevent fading and degradation of the fibres.

  • Check the care label before using a tumble dryer, as some jersey garments may shrink. If using a dryer, select a low heat setting and remove the garments while they are still slightly damp to reduce the risk of shrinkage and maintain elasticity.

Ironing jersey garments

  • If needed, iron jersey garments on a low to medium heat setting. Always iron them inside out to avoid shiny marks and preserve the fabric’s texture.

Storing jersey garments

  • Fold jersey garments instead of hanging them to prevent stretching and distortion.

  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent fading.
